Tom Averna has been conducting marine surveys since 1988 in the San Juan Islands. Before coming to Orcas Island in 1985 Tom apprenticed as a marine surveyor in Seattle with a master surveyor . In 1982, after returning from living and sailing in the Virgin Islands Tom apprenticed with a master surveyor in Annapolis, Md.
After being discharged from the US Army in 1969 Tom moved to the Virgin Islands where he worked as a boatyard foreman, a private yacht captain and as a delivery captain. He owned, sailed and lived aboard a gaff cutter built in 1931. He has logged 30,000 offshore miles sailing along the east coast, and Caribbean and doing two Westabout Atlantic crossings.
Tom is a member of Assoication of Certified Marine Surveyors, and ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
Since 1970 Tom has focused his career and life in boats, sail and power. His education includes the Westlawn School of Yacht Design, Diesel Institute of America and the College of the Virgin Islands. And of course continuing education provided by ABYC.
